Citizens gathered outside the Palace of Justice in Sofia on Tuesday to demand the resignation of acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov. The protest was organized by the Justice for All initiative under the slogan “SarafOFF, You Are Fired!”.

There was a heightened police presence in the area, and traffic was restricted.

In a State governed by the rule of law, temporary authority cannot become permanent, something the majority in the Supreme Judicial Council is attempting to achieve through procedural manoeuvres, the organizers said. Sarafov continues to occupy the post of acting Prosecutor General in violation of the law, they added.

The Prosecutors Chamber has shown that it does not make decisions independently but carries out political orders, so the tension has not yet reached a level where Sarafov becomes truly inconvenient and is thrown under the bus, lawyer Emil Georgiev from Justice for All told the media.

“Without genuine justice and a real, independent Prosecutor General, Bulgaria cannot have fair elections,” Petar Tanev from Students Against the Mafia said. “It is important to vote, because our future depends on it. It would not be possible for me to study law and work here while there is a single person at the top of the prosecution service who refuses to obey the law,” Tanev added.

The Prosecutors Chamber of the Supreme Judicial Council is expected to meet on Wednesday to discuss the appointment of a new acting Prosecutor General.
