The Constitutional Court has initiated a case at the request of 51 MPs challenging the constitutionality of the rejection of the National Assembly's of a proposal for a national referendum to postpone the adoption of the euro, submitted by President Rumen Radev on May 12 this year.

The rapporteur on the case is Judge Atanas Semov.

The MPs claim that the decision contradicts provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria, as well as international treaties to which Bulgaria is a party. The request was signed by MPs from Vazrazhdane, Velichie, and MECH.

At the beginning of December, Parliament rejected the President’s proposal to hold a referendum on the European currency. A few days ago, Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov said that the party would file a complaint with the Constitutional Court over Parliament’s rejection of the President’s proposal for a referendum on the euro.

On May 23, President Rumen Radev referred the matter to the Constitutional Court, seeking invalidation of a refusal by the then Parliament leader, Nataliya Kiselova, to submit for consideration by the National Assembly the proposal to hold a national referendum on the 2026 euro changeover.

On May 13, Kiselova returned the President’s proposal for a referendum as inadmissible. On June 10, the Constitutional Court admitted for consideration part of President Rumen Radev’s request in connection with Kiselova’s decision.
