Presenting the motives for the no-confidence motion tabled by Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) and supported by the Alliance for Rights and Freedoms and Morality, Unity, Honour against the Council of Ministers led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, Yes, Bulgaria Co-Chair and CC-DB MP Bozhidar Bozhanov said that the motion was filed because, under the command of MRF – New Beginning leader Delyan Peevski, the ruling parties are pushing the country toward an economic abyss. Bozhanov spoke from the parliamentary rostrum on Wednesday during the debates in the National Assembly, attended by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov and ministers from his cabinet.
On Wednesday, Bulgaria’s National Assembly is set to debate a draft decision on a motion of no confidence against the Council of Ministers, led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, over what the opposition describes as the government’s failure in economic policy that has triggered some of the largest protests in the country. On December 1, crowds of tens of thousands filled downtown Sofia. Large-scale demonstrations were held in the capital and most regional centres against the draft 2026 State Budget Act. The rallies were organized by the opposition CC-DB coalition following Borissov’s refusal to withdraw the already tabled budget bill. Another protest organized by CC-DB under the slogan “Resignation! Peevski and Borissov Out of Power” is set to take place in Sofia on December 10, starting at 6 p.m. Protests are also expected in other major cities across the country.
According to Bozhanov, the draft 2026 state budget and the arrogant behaviour of those in power were the final straw for broad social groups, who took to the squares across the country and shouted “Resign!”. He said this is the no-confidence vote of the protest, noting that more than 100,000 people chanted “Resign!” last week and would expect resignations immediately.
“Today the ruling parties will probably pull out a few numbers from the bag of statistics and say that everything is fine. The opposition will pull out other numbers and say that things are going downhill, that industrial production is declining, that foreign investments are shrinking, and that the administrative burden is growing,” Bozhanov said, stressing that “beyond the numbers, the people in the squares feel that nothing is fine, and this is not related to the eurozone”, but to the illegitimate way in which this government functions, “because of the political parasite Delyan Peevski, who sucks the legitimacy out of every government and drives tens of thousands of people into the streets”.
“The economy suffers because dependent, often incompetent people are placed in regulatory bodies, where they are only there to strike in an organized manner against some and to provide cover for others,” Bozhanov commented. “The economy requires investment in human capital, not keeping people dependent in state-owned companies, it requires investment in young doctors,” he added.
“Resignation is necessary, because the country’s economy cannot be a victim of Peevski’s boundless appetite for power and [GERB Chair Boyko] Borissov’s boundless fear because of his own sins,” Bozhanov said. According to him, the parties that supposedly form the governing coalition have no real say, because they are afraid and dependent.
