“Nataliya Kiselova’s decision was the right one for Bulgaria at the time. She returned to President Rumen Radev an obvious provocation and a clear attempt to stop the country on its path toward the eurozone,” MP Yavor Bozhankov from Continue the Change–Democratic Bulgaria said on Wednesday.

He noted that the Constitutional Court’s decision applies only to future proposals. If the President submits a new request for a referendum related to the introduction of the single European currency, the issue will be clear and resolved, since there is now a ruling by the Constitutional Court, Bozhankov said.

On Tuesday, the Constitutional Court ruled that the chair of Parliament does not have the competence to determine whether a national referendum is admissible.

On May 13, the then Parliament leader, Nataliya Kiselova, rejected as inadmissible a proposal by President Rumen Radev, requesting the holding of a national referendum. On May 23, President Rumen Radev referred the matter to the Constitutional Court for a binding interpretation of the Constitution.
