Acting Prosecutor General of Bulgaria Borislav Sarafov met with Hungarian Prosecutor General Gabor Nagy at the Palace of Justice in Sofia during the latter’s official visit to Bulgaria at Sarafov’s invitation, the Bulgarian Prosecution Service announced on Monday. Nagy was accompanied by Barna Miskolczi, head of the Department for European and International Relations at the Hungarian Prosecution Service. Deputy Prosecutors General at the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor’s Office Vanya Stefanova and Magdalena Lazarova also attended the meeting.
Sarafov and Nagy discussed the challenges both countries face in upholding the rule of law within the European Union and emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between law enforcement institutions in EU member states as a key tool to combat cross-border organized crime, particularly in the area of illegal migration.
Sarafov briefed his Hungarian counterpart on the outcomes of the Fourth Forum of Balkan Prosecutors General, held in Sofia in early October — an event that exemplifies successful professional collaboration and strong partnership between prosecution services in Southeast Europe and the EU Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation, Eurojust.
Both Sarafov and Nagy highlighted the longstanding excellent cooperation between the law enforcement authorities of Bulgaria and Hungary, reinforced by the 2018 Memorandum of Understanding between the two prosecutor’s offices. The two sides underscored the leading role of their institutions in combating international criminal networks that exploit modern information technologies. They agreed to conduct joint training sessions and exchanges of experience and best practices in investigating cybercrime, money laundering, and other offenses.
During his visit to Bulgaria, the Hungarian Prosecutor General is also expected to meet with representatives of the executive branch and national security services.
