One out of every five citizens of North Macedonia lives in poverty, the country’s State Statistical Office reported on Wednesday. The conclusion was drawn in a survey on incomes and living conditions in 2023, conducted according to EU recommendations.

The survey, cited by local media, shows that 22.2% of North Macedonia citizens were poor in 2023. Worst affected were families with three or more children, and single parents.

In terms of age, the share of the poor was highest among children and adolescents aged 17 and younger (30%), followed by people between 18 and 64 (20.5%), and those aged 65 and over (19.2%).

Women were generally poorer than men, and the share of poor pensioners was 11.3%, according to Deutsche Welle.
