In the first four months of the year, 3,670 attempts by third-country nationals to cross illegally into Bulgaria were prevented, Border Police reported on Thursday. The attempts prevented in April were by 28% more than those in March.

In January-April 2025, a total of 450 migrants were detained while illegally crossing the Bulgarian-Turkish border, 169 migrants at the Bulgarian-Romanian border, and 7 migrants at the Bulgarian-Greek border.

On Wednesday, Border Police found three illegal migrants without IDs during a check of a car near the southeastern village of Krushenets, Border Police also reported. The driver, a 20-year-old man from Dobrich (Northeastern Bulgaria), was detained along with the foreign nationals and a fast-track procedure for smuggling was initiated against him. It was determined that two of the migrants were from Morocco and one, from Algeria; a procedure has been launched against them for illegal border crossing.

On Thursday, Interior Minister Daniel Mitov commented on Bulgaria's border protection. He pointed out that serious work is being done on technical security. "So far the figures in terms of migration pressure at the borders are very good and we are working with all our EU partners. The efforts are bearing fruit. We are not seeing increased migratory pressure at the open Schengen borders," the Minister said.
