"We will vote in support of Nicușor Dan in the presidential elections runoff on May 18," said acting leader of the opposition Save Romania Union and Mayor of Timișoara Dominic Fritz.

On Monday, Fritz temporarily assumed leadership of the party after its former leader, Elena Lasconi, resigned.

The decision to support Nicușor Dan will be officially voted on by the political committee later in the date. The party will also provide financial support to Nicusor Dan, who is the current Mayor of Bucharest, as made clear in Dominic Fritz’s statement, which was broadcast live online.

“These elections are not a beauty contest but a choice about the direction each of us will take after May 18. Every family in Romania, every young person, will be affected if George Simion becomes president. This is understood by voters of Victor Ponta and Crin Antonescu, and this is what we will discuss over the next two weeks. Romania is in extraordinary danger—possibly the most dangerous moment since the Revolution. We are facing a violent, extremist candidate. The stake in these two weeks is for all of us to mobilize, beyond political differences we may have. Our call is not to waste time; each of our supporters must take this as a personal responsibility. Nicușor Dan will not win unless everyone steps up. If we leave the responsibility to others, George Simion will become president,” said Dominic Fritz. He described George Simion as a danger to Romania.
