The construction of the first cross-border interconnection quantum communication infrastructure between Bulgaria and Romania was officially launched at a ceremony held at the Institute of Robotics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia on Thursday, the Innovation and Growth Ministry announced. The event was organized by the Institute of Robotics and the QUASAR Competence Centre, the national coordinator for the development of pan-European quantum communication infrastructure.
The new link will connect Sofia and Bucharest and will become a key element of the future pan-European quantum communication infrastructure. It is part of a broader European initiative to build a secure communication environment for government institutions, scientific organizations, and strategic infrastructures in the European Union, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) said.
Among the official guests at the event were Innovation and Growth Deputy Minister Borislav Bankov, Head of the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria Yordanka Chobanova, representatives of the State Commission on Information Security and BAS, as well as representatives of the diplomatic missions of Romania and Greece.
Addressing the event, Bankov said: “The link to Bucharest will provide a secure communication channel for government institutions, research organizations, and strategic enterprises in the region. At the same time, it will lay the groundwork for the future development of quantum services in support of Europe’s digital transformation, cybersecurity, and technological sovereignty.
Together with the quantum corridor between the two capitals, the new infrastructure will form a large-scale quantum communication channel, uniting the national quantum infrastructures of Greece, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Romania, and the Netherlands. The implementation of the initiative will lead to the construction of the longest strategic terrestrial quantum communication network in Europe, connecting Southeast Europe with Central and Western Europe and establishing Bulgaria as a key regional hub in the pan-European quantum communications architecture.
