The queue of trucks on the Maritsa Motorway before the Kapitan Andreevo border control checkpoint stretched for around 16 kilometres on Friday morning. According to the Traffic Police Department of the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior in Haskovo, the situation is very dynamic, and the information changes every hour.
Traffic to and from Turkiye has been extremely heavy for several days, with the queues of trucks before the checkpoint often exceeding 20 kilometres in length.
A bilateral working meeting was held on January 21 at the Turkish checkpoint Kapikule, adjacent to Kapitan Andreevo, due to the traffic problem. Measures to ease traffic and speed up processing were discussed. It was noted that the problem is exacerbated by the ongoing two-month-long protests by Greek farmers, causing freight companies to change their routes.
