The 16th Balkans Beyond Borders Short Film Festival will open on Thursday with a simultaneous screening of short Balkan films in Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Italy, Kosovo, Romania, the Republic of North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkiye, said the festival's host in Bulgaria, the TaM Club in Veliko Tarnovo.

The theme of the festival is DISTORToΠia - How We Reflect Reality with a programme entitled Distortions of Unexpected Events, which has collected stories that balance between the accidental and the fateful, between reality and illusion, opening up space for multiple interpretations of the unexpected, the TaM Club noted.

"The theme invites us to question the world around us, to confront constructed truths and to reflect on the way imagination, memory and perception shape our understanding of reality," the organizers of the festival also pointed out. They emphasized that with this joint initiative, the festival aims to encourage young filmmakers, stimulate creative dialogue and strengthen regional ties. "By connecting multiple towns in a simultaneous screening event, the festival transforms cinema into a collective act of participation and cultural reflection. Thus, it becomes a celebration of diversity, creativity and shared cultural identity in the Balkans and beyond", the organizers said.
