On August 31, 2006, Sofia Airport officially brought into operation its new runway, positioned 210 metres north of the previous one. The eastern end of the 3,600-metre-long facility crosses the Iskar River via a specially constructed bridge, according to information published on the airport’s website.
Additional high-speed and connecting taxiways were also built, allowing for 20 aircraft movements per hour while maintaining a high level of safety.
The aeronautical equipment on the new runway supports landings in low visibility conditions, meeting ICAO Category IIIB standards.
