On April 29, 1980, the first electrified railway ring in Bulgaria was unveiled. With a length of 633 km, it serviced the Sofia - Gorna Oryahovitsa - Dubovo - Karlovo - Sofia route. 

The line passed through 74 tunnels with a total length of 28 km.

Bulgaria's first electrified railway line was unveiled on April 27, 1963. It connected Sofia and Plovdiv (South Central Bulgaria) and was 156 km long.

The first railway line in the  country - the 224-km long line between Ruse (on the Danube) and Varna (on the Black Sea) - was launched back in 1866.
