Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant connected Unit 5 - the country’s first 1,000-megawatt reactor - to the national grid on November 29, 1987. The reactor is a WWER-1000 model B-320, equipped with a hermetic containment structure and three independent safety-system channels.

Construction of Unit 5 officially began on July 9, 1980. Turbine installation started on March 1, 1985. The first nuclear fuel cassette was loaded into the reactor on October 3, 1987, and on November 5, 1987, the reactor achieved initial startup, reaching its minimum controllable power level. The reactor reached full power on June 21, 1988. The inauguration ceremony for Unit 5 was held on March 23, 1989.
