The development of a modern economy, defence capabilities, and even daily life is unthinkable without the achievements of space science, technology, and industry, President Rumen Radev said at the opening of EnduroSat’s new space centre on Thursday, the President’s Press Secretariat reported.

Over the years, Bulgaria has built a strong and dynamic ecosystem in the fields of information technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, mechatronics, and other advanced scientific and technological areas, Radev said in his address.

He recalled that Bulgaria has more than 50 years of experience in space research and industry, highlighting the country’s achievements as the sixth nation to send a human into space and the third to produce space food. Bulgarian Academy of Sciences researchers have developed over 150 unique scientific instruments, some of which are still operating aboard the International Space Station, while one continues to orbit Mars, transmitting data back to Earth.

Radev also referred to the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT), established in Bulgaria as the first of its kind in Eastern Europe, which is making progress in quantum technology and AI research.

The President described EnduroSat as "a clear example that there are no limits to success when bold vision, hard work, and teamwork come together". He said the company represents Bulgaria’s potential as a partner and ally and commended its "Space Challenges" educational programme, which trains young talent from Bulgaria and abroad through both theoretical and practical experience. He also noted the joint master’s programme in Space Engineering and Technology developed by EnduroSat in partnership with the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy, the Georgi Benkovski Air Force Academy, and Sofia University, aimed at preparing the next generation of space engineers.

During his visit, President Radev toured laboratories at the new space centre and was briefed on the company’s future development plans.
