President Iliana Iotova received a written message from the President of the State of Palestine and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Mahmoud Abbas. The message reaffirmed the traditionally good relations between Bulgaria and Palestine and provided information on the current situation in the State of Palestine, the President’s press office said on Wednesday.
The head of State met in Sofia with the special envoy of the President of the State of Palestine, Dr Ahmed Majdalani, who delivered the written message to President Yotova.
In mid-June, the 90-year-old Mahmoud Abbas announced that presidential elections would be held in early 2027.
Bulgaria maintains official relations with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which has been recognized by the international community as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people since February 1973, according to the website of the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In November 1988, the Bulgarian government formally recognized the State of Palestine, which had been proclaimed by the PLO, through an official declaration.
