The Parliamentary Committee on Culture and Media, at its meeting on Thursday, adopted the procedural rules for nominating Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) Director General candidates.
"The term of office of the current Director General, Kiril Valchev, expires on January 27, 2026. According to Article 12, paragraph 1 of the BTA Act, the National Assembly elects the agency’s Director General two months before the term of the current one expires," Committee Chair Toshko Yordanov said.
The members of the Committee on Culture and Media did not comment on the procedural rules. They were adopted with 12 votes in favour and one abstention.
According to the adopted procedural rules, nominations for BTA Director General may be submitted by parliamentary groups or by MPs in writing through the National Assembly Chair to the Committee on Culture and Media within seven days of the adoption of this decision. In an open session, the Committee will hold a hearing of the admitted candidates.
When electing a new BTA Director General, the nominee who receives more than half of the votes of the MPs present will be elected. If no candidate is elected, the National Assembly will adopt a decision to open a new procedure for the election of a BTA Director General.
