The Cabinet decided to recommend to President Rumen Radev that Kristalina Georgieva be awarded the Order of the Balkan Range, First Class, in recognition of her contribution to the country’s reputation and her achievements in the global economy, the Cabinet's press service reported here Wednesday.
Kristalina Georgieva was born on August 13, 1953, in Sofia. She is a Bulgarian economist with international recognition and has served as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund since 2019. Georgieva is the first individual from Eastern Europe to hold this position.
She began her career in academia before spending over twenty years at the World Bank, ultimately serving as chief executive officer. From 2010 to 2016, she was European Commissioner, initially overseeing international cooperation and humanitarian aid, and later managing the budget and human resources portfolio. Georgieva is recognized for her expertise in sustainable development, global crisis management, and institutional reform.
She has received multiple international awards and is recognized as a leading figure in global financial and economic policy. Georgieva has actively supported Bulgaria’s pursuit of full EU membership and its commitment to the European Union’s values and integration process.
The government regards the conferment of the State decoration as the highest form of honor and respect for Kristalina Georgieva.
