Veliko Tarnovo and Gabrovo should launch a joint bid for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2032, proposed Veliko Tarnovo Mayor Daniel Panov on Saturday.
The idea was presented during the 48 Hours - Varusha South Festival. On the open stage in front of the Tsarevets Fortress on Saturday, the festival’s artistic director, Galin Popov, thanked all the participants and guests who, for the fourth year, have shared in Veliko Tarnovo’s cultural and artistic spaces. He noted that it has long been his dream for the two cities to join forces and showcase their potential with a joint application for the prestigious title.
This year's festival places a key focus on closeness. In the current and following year, Bulgaria is set to submit its bid for European Capital of Culture. If the two cities join forces, they will have a strong chance of success, said Popov.
Mayor Daniel Panov called on all artists who support the idea to work together toward it, as the two cities share a common region and have rich historical ties dating back to the Bulgarian National Revival.
This year’s partner of the festival in Veliko Tarnovo is the Goethe-Institut. The director of the institute and head of the Cultural Program Department, Kirsten Hackenbroch, said that she was impressed by the rich program and the exchange of different cultures, languages, and forms of communication across more than 50 locations in Veliko Tarnovo, which provides a strong foundation for future development.
On Sunday, the festival program features a morning liturgy at the Church of St. Nicholas, followed by a lecture and discussion on the work of master builder Kolyu Ficheto, organized by the Historical Museum in Dryanovo, a variety of attractions including a camera obscura installation, concerts, yoga sessions, creative workshops, and meetings with artists from different genres.
