A team from the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water in Sofia (RIEW) carried out an inspection after a fire at the Bobov Dol Thermal Power Plant (TPP) in Golemo Selo, said the Ministry of Environment and Water on its Facebook page.

The fire was contained by fire brigade teams. The flames affected a transformer from the First unit of the plant.

By orders of the Executive Environmental Agency, the air quality in the area is being monitored. A mobile automatic measuring station has been set up in the village of Golemo Selo. According to initial data from the General Directorate of Fire Safety and Protection of the Population  there are no exceedances of air quality standards in the area. RIEW - Sofia will continue to inform the public about the results.

Earlier, the press centre of the Interior Ministry told BTA that no people were injured as a result of the incident.

The Bobov Dol TPP is taking urgent measures to restore its full capacity and to produce the energy necessary for the security and balance of the energy system, the plant said.

"We would like to thank the firefighting teams from Dupnitsa, Kyustendil, Bobov Dol and Golemo Selo for their extremely quick and professional response. The fire started from a transformer. Despite the huge material damage, production lines, coal and biomass were not affected. Thanks to the safety measures and rules that the plant has in place, the team that was at work reacted adequately and there were no injuries," says the plant's Executive Director Chavdar Stoynev.

RIEW Sofia, through the Executive Environmental Agency, made emergency measurements with a mobile device at two points. There were no deviations in all 5 indicators - the values were below the detection limits, which means that there was no contamination due to the fire. The data from the measuring station are also within the norm.

"The assessment of the material damage is still pending, but the most important thing is that no people were injured. All units are already working," added Stoynev.
