Bulgarian high school students won four medals at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad, the press office of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski reported on Tuesday. This year’s Olympiad brought together 354 students from 88 countries, along with eight independent participants.
The competition was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), under the patronage of the UAE Ministry of Education and in partnership with United Arab Emirates University.
The Olympiad included both experimental and theoretical components. In the experimental section, participants worked on three laboratory tasks, while the theoretical round challenged them with nine problems covering various branches of chemistry.
Damyan Ivanov, a 10th-grade student at Sofia High School of Mathematics, earned a gold medal. His schoolmate, Viktor Angelov, a 12th-grader, won silver. Bronze medals went to Nikola Ninkov, an 11th-grader at the same school, and Teodor Kusev, an 11th-grade student at the National High School of Science and Mathematics Sofia.
The Bulgarian chemistry team was led by Assoc. Prof. Donka Tasheva and Prof. Penka Vasileva from the Chemistry and Pharmacy Faculty of Sofia University.
