site.btaUNESCO's Director of World Heritage Centre Says LIK Magazine's Issue Helps All Delegates Discover Bulgaria's Role, Contribution
UNESCO's Director of World Heritage Centre Lazare Eloundou Assomo said Monday that the publication of the LIK magazine for UNESCO is an occasion for all delegates at the session to discover Bulgaria's role and contribution. Speaking during a launch of the July issue of the monthly magazine, he described Bulgaria as a country developing international cooperation on World Heritage. The event was held at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, as well as at Bulgarian News Agency's (BTA) MaxiM Multimedia Centre in Sofia and at the agency's national press clubs in Bulgaria.
Assomo underlined the importance of the event, which as an occasion to celebrate the importance of cooperation between Bulgaria and UNESCO for World Heritage and the important contribution of Bulgaria to international cooperation in culture and other fields for 60 years.
He remarked that in unfolding his magazine he was reminded of the fact that Bulgaria has hosted UNESCO events. UNESCO's World Heritage Centre Director recalled that Bulgarian Irina Bokova was the Director-General of the organization and appointed him to the position he currently holds.
Assomo added that the LIK magazine gives people an opportunity to recall that Bulgaria also has a Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage for South-Eastern Europe.
According to him, the magazine will make people buy a ticket and visit Bulgaria.
The 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee runs until July 16 at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris under the presidency of Bulgaria. As part of the session, Bulgaria will present elements of its cultural and natural heritage. Later Monday, the July issue of LIK magazine – dedicated to Bulgaria and UNESCO – will also be officially presented at UNESCO.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was founded on November 16, 1945. Bulgaria became a member on May 17, 1956, the same year its National Commission for UNESCO was established. The Commission coordinates activities between Bulgarian institutions and UNESCO.
UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee is one of the two governing bodies responsible for implementing the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. It is composed of representatives from 21 countries elected from among the 196 States Parties to the Convention.
