site.btaProtest Demonstration in Sofia Calls for End to War on Roads

Citizens observed a minute of silence and bowed in memory of those who died on the roads during a protest demonstration in downtown Sofia on Sunday evening. It was held at the place where a car crashed into a public transport bus in the early hours of August 15, killing one and injuring seven. The initiative was organized by the Angels on the Road Association.
Those gathered showed photos of their relatives and acquaintances who had lost their lives in road accidents. They carried posters reading, "Boulevards are not runways", "Your choice can take a life", and "Bulgaria has no children to kill".
"The war on the roads shows absolute carelessness, and something has to change. It cannot go on like this," Petya Ivanova of the Association told BTA. "We want society to wake up and make people think," she added. In her words, accidents continue to happen in which people lose their lives on the road.
The war on the roads must stop, said Dencho Dimitrov, brother of a road accident victim. He said stronger public support and tougher justice are needed to make that happen.
