The Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev joined a meeting with young people and youth organization representatives to mark the 80th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter. The event was organized by the United Nations Association of Bulgaria and took place at Sofia University, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Saturday.

In his address to young people, Georgiev emphasized the importance of the Charter as a symbol of hope, solidarity, and a new beginning after World War II. He recalled that Bulgaria is celebrating 70 years as an active member of the UN, during which time the country has consistently upheld the principles of international law, peace, human rights, and sustainable development.

In the context of contemporary global challenges, Bulgaria supports the UN80 initiative of the Secretary-General of the world organization, aimed at modernizing and reforming the UN system. The minister emphasized that improving the effectiveness of the Organization is key to dealing with crises and protecting its core principles—from Ukraine to the Middle East.

Bulgaria's top diplomat announced that on July 23, 2025, Bulgaria will present its Second Voluntary National Review on progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals, which includes a special section prepared by young people, demonstrating the understanding of Bulgarian institutions that young people are the driving force behind change. He emphasized that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sees young people not only as future leaders, but also as active participants in the global dialogue of today.

Among the initiatives in support of youth participation and youth empowerment, the following were highlighted: the Bulgarian Youth Delegates to the UN programme, the organisation of training seminars and simulations of diplomatic negotiations, and the launch of a national student essay competition on the topic “Bulgaria in the UN: the voice of small and medium-sized countries.” The winner of the competition will be part of the Bulgarian delegation to the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York in the fall of 2025.

During the discussion, Bulgaria's top diplomat engaged in an open and sincere dialogue with the young people on the most pressing foreign policy issues and challenges facing the international community. "The future belongs to those who take action. Supporting young people is our commitment and investment in tomorrow," Georgiev concluded.
