The fifth activation of the Mine Countermeasures Black Sea (MCM Black Sea) Task Group began with a ceremony in the port of Burgas on Wednesday. Warships from Bulgaria, Romania and Turkiye participate in the exercises, whose task is to ensure the safety of maritime traffic and counter the threat of naval mines.

The MCM Black Sea Task Group was established in January 2024, following the signing of a memorandum between Bulgaria, Romania and Turkiye, with the main goal of ensuring that the Black Sea is free of mines and safe.

Taking part in this activation are the auxiliary ship Kapitan 1st Rank Dimitar Dobrev and the minehunter Struma of the Bulgarian Navy, the minehunter Sublocotenent Ion Ghiculescu of the Romanian Naval Forces, and the minehunter Akcakoca of the Turkish Navy.

Attending the ceremony were the Commander of the Flotilla of Warships and Auxiliary Ships, Flotilla Admiral Radko Penev, the Commander of the MCM Black Sea, Navy Captain Pavlin Petrov, and the Commanding Officer of the Black Sea Tactical Countermeasures Task Force, Navy Captain Lachezar Ivanov.

The exercises, which end on June 26, aim to increase the level of training and interoperability between the naval forces of the participating countries, namely the detection and neutralization of naval mines, and a joint response to threats to freedom of navigation and safety in the region.
