Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has announced his resignation on Friday as reported by the Moldovan public television Moldova 1. "I accepted the offer to take up the post of Prime Minister with a great sense of responsibility and with the firm conviction that I could contribute to change for the better. When I realized that I could no longer fulfil my duties in accordance with my principles and beliefs, I decided to resign," Munteanu wrote in a post on social media.

He thanked the members of the government and his staff for their joint work, and said that he will continue to serve the country, regardless of the position he will hold and the field in which he will work.

Munteanu headed the government after the 2025 parliamentary elections. His candidacy, put forward by the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), was supported by 55 MPs.

Upon taking office, Munteanu's cabinet announced as its main priorities accelerating European integration, raising the minimum wage to 10,000 lei (EUR 500), implementing the EUR 1.9 billion Economic Growth Plan, and completing negotiations for Moldova's accession to the European Union by 2028.

The resignation of the Prime Minister automatically terminates the powers of the entire government. The President must appoint a caretaker Prime Minister from among the current ministers, who will lead the cabinet until a new government is formed.

President Maia Sandu will soon hold consultations with parliamentary parties, after which she will propose a candidate for prime minister. Until a new cabinet is appointed, the incumbent government will only perform current administrative functions.
