Nearly 1,000 foreign students are studying at the Technical University in Sofia (TU), Silvia Borislavova, Head of the Academic Department at TU Sofia, told BTA on Wednesday.

Students come from 45 countries from five different continents, while a little over 100 of them are from European Union countries. They study in specialties such as Communication and Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Intelligent Systems and Artificial Intelligence, as well as Informatics and Software Sciences.

Borislavova noted that students mostly apply for specialties taught in English, which include Computer Science and Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering. She pointed out that 2025 has seen a significant increase in foreign students, as the preparatory groups for specialized and language training in English and Bulgarian has increased from two to five between the 2023/24 academic year and the 2024/25 academic year.

Documents are also being accepted for the winter semester of the 2025/2026 academic year, Borislavova said, adding that according to preliminary forecasts a larger number of foreign students are expected to choose TU Sofia next year as well. TU Sofia is among the leading universities in Bulgaria and has a good reputation both in the country and abroad, she pointed out and noted that the university offers a variety of majors in English, which are aimed at foreign students. The majors offered by TU Sofia in English, French and German follow the modern development of science and technology, and meet the requirements of the labor market.

TU Sofia partners with higher education institutions and educational institutions in Europe and beyond, and also offers opportunities for exchange and internships abroad, Borislavova emphasized, adding that this is a great advantage for students who want to gain additional international experience for their career.
