An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck Mount Athos in Northern Greece Saturday afternoon, Skai TV reported.
The quake occurred around 15:46 hrs local time, with its epicentre located 9 km northwest of Karyes, the administrative center of the monastic republic of Mount Athos, according to the Greek Institute of Geodynamics. The earthquake's focal depth was estimated at 12.5 km. The quake was felt in surrounding areas, including Thessaloniki.
Seven minutes after the main shock, a secondary tremor with a magnitude of 3.8 was recorded.
