The legislative package currently being prepared by the European Union (EU) to combat illegal migration will guarantee the fundamental rights of both European citizens and migrants, said Justice Minister Georgi Georgiev. He was speaking Friday at the opening of the conference “How to Stop Migrant Smuggling: The Role of the EU in Understanding Criminal Networks,” organized by MEP Elena Yoncheva.

Georgiev emphasized that the package aims to ensure the right to security and a stable social environment, which should not be undermined by the activities of criminal organizations.

He noted that there is reason for optimism, as EU legislation is being modernized to adequately address new forms of crime related to migration and the enormous profits generated by it. Nevertheless, organized crime continues to adapt and employ innovative methods, the Minister noted.

Georgiev also said that a few weeks ago he held talks with Muhsin Senturk, General Prosecutor of the Supreme Court of Appeals of the Republic of Türkiye. They discussed concrete operational measures for joint actions between the law enforcement authorities of the two countries.
