Pernik will host the 44th Convention of the Federation of European Carnival Cities (FECG), the local authorities said. More than 100 delegates from 20 countries are expected to arrive in the city for the annual forum, where they will elect the organization's new chairman and leadership. The event will be officially opened on Monday at 5 pm with a parade of flags of the participating countries. The accompanying events will begin on Sunday at the Krakra fortress with reenactments of rituals, practices, military equipment.
Pernik has been a member of FECG since 1995, and in 2009 the International Board of the organization declared the city the European Capital of the Masquerade Games. In 2004, the 24th Convention of the organization was held in Pernik. At that time, its longtime chairman, Henry van der Kroon, was named honorary citizen of the mining town.
In May 2023 in Leskovac (Serbia) Pernik was elected to host the annual FECG forum in 2024. Eighty delegates from 15 countries unanimously supported Pernik’s bid because of the good organization of the 29th edition of the International Festival of Masquerade Games Surva.
