A Bulgarian delegation, led by National Assembly Deputy Chair Rossitsa Kirova visited Izmail, Ukraine.   

On the delegation were also Sofia Municipal Councillor Dragomir Mladenov, Dean of the Faculty of Geology and Geography of Sofia University Prof. Kliment Naydenov and writer Severina Markova. The delegation also visited the Izmail Polytechnic Lyceum, where there is a memorial plaque of Hristo Botev. “In the 19th century this place housed the state church-parish school where Botev taught Bulgarian in 1869-71. Bulgarians are fighting to have it named after him and are convinced that in time they will succeed, Kirova told BTA. “We also visited the Izmail State University of Humanities, where there is a monument of Hristo Botev, where we laid flowers,” Kirova said. 

“We visited the classrooms of the Bulgarian Sunday School, which are in the university building. There was a new hall, which was equipped with the help of the Consul General of Bulgaria, with new computers, an interactive board and many teaching materials. These are rooms where ethnic Bulgarians learn everything about Bulgaria - the language, history, geography and traditions of Bulgaria,” Kirova said.  

In Izmail, a quarter of the population is Bulgarian, 26.2 % Moldovan, Ukrainian and Russian about 20% each, there are Gagauz and 1% Gypsies.   

The Bulgarian delegation yesterday visited the Bulgarian village of Zarya (former Kamchik) in Sarata municipality, Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi region.
