The Head of Bulgaria's Border Police Directorate General, Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov, took part in a meeting of the Management Board of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) in Warsaw, the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior said on Wednesday.

At the beginning of the meeting, the representatives of Bulgaria and Romania were congratulated on their planned accession to the Schengen border-free area by air and sea in March. The Bulgarian delegation was also congratulated on the excellent report after the Schengen assessment commission check in November 2023.

The Bulgarians asked Frontex to double its staff and equipment at Bulgaria's external EU border.

The meeting discussed the current migration situation in Europe. Speakers said the migration pressure comes mainly along the Central European route via the Greek, Italian and French coast of the Mediterranean Sea. They noted the relatively less intense movement of migrants along the Balkan route against the backdrop of an overall increase in migrant pressure.
