Bulgaria is a preferred country for Turkish students to pursue higher education, Foreign Students Coordinator at the University of Economics – Varna, Selvet Niyazieva, told BTA. The University participates in the International Education Fairs of Turkiye, which takes place in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir from November 10 to 16.

The event, which took place in the Turkish capital on Tuesday, saw participation from about 300 international universities.

Slavena Tsoneva, head of the International Relations Department of the University, told BTA that the International Business major aroused the most interest among potential bachelor's degree candidates. The Computer Science major was the most attractive to potential candidates for the Master's degree.

Niyazieva said that applicants face the challenge of having to have their diplomas recognized by the Regional Education Inspectorate in Bulgaria before they can apply for higher education in Bulgaria. First, potential future students have to apply for short-stay visas. That allows them to come and submit their documents to the Regional Inspectorate, then return and get a certificate from the Regional Inspectorate. Only then can they apply to university, Niyazieva said.

She added that Bulgaria is an extremely popular studying destination among foreign students, given the favourable conditions against the current economic situation. Preferred destinations for Turkish prospective students such as the US and Canada are now becoming unaffordable. Some of the factors that attract Turkish students to Bulgaria are the proximity between the two countries and the opportunities for double degrees, which can be recognized by the Turkish Council of Higher Education.
