Bulgarian teams involved in the rescue of an American speleologist are in a section 700 to 1,000 metres deep in Morca Cave, southern Turkiye, Cave Rescue Bulgaria told BTA.
The rescue operation of the American speleologist Mark Dickey was one of the most complicated operations carried out so far.
The Bulgarian team includes 19 people: 17 from Cave Rescue Bulgaria and two volunteers.
Turkish and international teams, including Bulgarian rescuers, are involved in the rescue of the American caver. Forty-year-old Dickey has been stranded at a depth of 1,040 metres in Morca Cave in Taurus Mountain since September 2, having suffered a gastrointestinal bleeding during an international expedition into the cave.
The victim is currently stable, no longer losing blood, conscious, alert and able to speak. The plan is to start the actual extraction from minus 1,040 metres, where Dickey is currently located, within a day at most.
Several stops for rest are planned in newly built temporary camps so that both the rescuers and the victim can rest and eat.
There are doctors and paramedics with Dickey, including Bulgarian staff, who are monitoring his health condition so as to prevent any deterioration. Conditions in the cave do not allow serious medical manipulation.
Dickey has received several banks of blood, and he is feeling better.
The rescue operation is one of the most complex ever carried out and which can happen at such a depth.
