On Tuesday Turkiye recorded the hottest day in its history, Environment Minister Mehmet Ozhaseki wrote on X, formerly Twitter. The new temperature record was measured at 49.5 °C in Eskisehir, Central Turkiye. The old record dated from July 20, 2021, when a temperature of 49.1 °C was measured in Sirnak.

In the past days street thermometers measured temperatures of about 50C in various parts of the country.

The extreme heat in Turkiye is set to continue this week. For weeks the country has been in the grips of a heat wave coming from Africa and for several days of another one from Basra in Iraq.

This year’s heat wave is the longest.
