A working group will negotiate an increase in funding for higher education through 2023. This was agreed at a meeting at Sofia University on Monday by the National Branch Syndicate "Higher Education and Science" to the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (HES-CITUB), the Council of Rectors and the National Representation of Student Councils (NRSC).

The working group will comprise of the presidents of the three organizations - prof. Lilyana Valcheva (HES-CITUB), Acad. Lachezar Traykov (Council of Rectors) and Daniel Parushev (NRSC). Its establishment is on the occasion of the state budget for 2023 adopted by the National Assembly, and the topics of income policy, scholarships and priorities of higher education institutions will be on the agenda.

The aim is to have documents with the organizations' demands ready by September. 

Among the demands are that increased salaries for lecturers in state universities (starting salary of BGN 1,750) should be from January 2023 instead of August. 

"In our view, there is a possibility that the funds could be increased", said Prof. Lilyana Valcheva. Daniel Parushev added that an increase in the minimum scholarship from BGN 85 to BGN 120 has been proposed to the Education Minister. 

The meeting was also attended by the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), Acad. Julian Revalsky, the Rector of Sofia University Prof. Anastas Gerdzhikov, the Rector of Veliko Tarnovo University Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov, the Rector of Ruse University Acad. Hristo Beloev, Rector of the University of Economics in Varna Evgeni Stanimirov and others.
