The northeastern village of Probuda is preparing to host the sixth edition of the only garlic feast in Bulgaria, which this year will be held on September 1, BTA learnt from Aneta Kircheva, secretary of the Rodina 1927 community centre in the village. The vegetable which is a local trademark, has been grown by generations in the vicinity.

This year’s edition of the feast will include a culinary competition for dishes containing garlic and a musical programme in which the amateur chefs can also take part. A professional jury will evaluate the tasty creations of community centres, pensioners’ clubs, schools and other organizations. The winners will receive a diploma and an award. There are no age limits to participation.

A farmers' market where the local garlic growers will be able to sell their produce will also be held for a third year in a row.

The residents of Probuda have preserved a special garlic variety, which has been grown here for nearly 40 years, Kircheva told BTA. To date, the crop has not been harvested yet due to the recent rains and some complain there has been an infestation of pests, but still hope the final outcome will be good.
