A total of 56,596 live births (99.4% of total births) were registered in Bulgaria in 2022. Compared to the previous year, the number of live births decreased by 2,082 children or 3.5%. The total number of children aged 0 to 17 years in the country was 1,099,696, according to data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI) report for 2022, presented on Thursday at a joint press conference with UNICEF.

Boys outnumbered girls, said the head of NSI’s Demographic and Social Statistics Directorate, Magdalena Kostova.

The number of live births of boys (28,923) was 1,250 higher than the number of live births of girls (27,673). The institute explained that there are 957 girls per every 1,000 boys. In urban and rural areas live births were 41,986 and 14,610 respectively, while the fertility rate was 8.8% in urban areas and 8.5% in rural areas. The highest fertility rates were in the districts of Sliven, Sofia and Plovdiv. In 2022, the average age of women giving birth to their first child was 27.6 years. Compared to 2021, it has increased by 0.1 years, NSI pointed out.

There were 274 deaths of children under one year of age in the country and the infant mortality rate was 4.8%, compared to the 5.6% the year before.

NSI also examined the number of marriages in 2022. There were 26,013 registered legal marriages, 607 fewer than in 2021. The average age at marriage was 33 for men and 30.1 for women, respectively, and the districts with the most marriages per 1,000 people were Razgrad and Silistra. Pernik and Vratsa had the lowest number of marriages.
