The 31st edition of the "Varna Summer" International Theatre Festival kicks off on Thursday noon with a documentary exhibition dedicated to the birth centenary of local-born theatre director and pedagogue Julia Ognyanova at the Stoyan Bachvarov Varna Theatre. Simultaneously, Nezavisimost Square will be the venue of a street parade production with larger-than-life puppets by V.O.S.A. Theatre from the Czech Republic, the organizers said.

The official opening is scheduled for the evening, with "Performance ½" music and theatre show of the Bulgarian Army Theatre at the Drama Theatre in Varna. Written by its cast, 14 actresses at the Bulgarian Army Theatre, "Performance ½" refers to the legendary "8 ½", Italian director Federico Fellini’s film which blurs the line between life and cinema, fiction and reality. Director Stoyan Radev marks the 60th-year anniversary of the film’s release, paying his tribute to the film with a performance about the never-ending game of reflection between theatre and life.

The fest will then continue in the open with The Propane Punk show, a contemporary circus spectacle that smells of iron and propane. The MansterVille & Blackout Paradox show from the Czech Republic is authored and directed by Vojta Stulc.

"The Three Fairies" directed by Vera Stoikova and presented by State Puppet Theatre – Varna is part of the parallel programme for the first day of the fest.

The "Varna Summer" International Theatre Festival traditionally continues until June 10. This year the digital edition will offer in June two more performances from Hungary and one from Great Britain. On July 23, the audience will see the theatre-opera performance " The Infernal Comedy: Confessions of a Serial Killer" starring actor John Malkovich at the Varna Festival and Congress Centre.
