The pre-trial proceedings for the so-called "gold bars" case were terminated on May 10, Sofia city prosecutor Iliana Kirilova told BTA.

The investigation was initiated based on photos, which were claimed to be from the bedroom of GERB leader and then-prime minister Boyko Borissov. Banknotes and gold bars were visible in the images.

The problem from a legal point of view is that there is no way to establish whether the banknotes and bars in the photos were real or just replicas, even if they match the numbers of existing ones, commented the prosecution service.

The state prosecution recalled that a number of international orders and inquiries were made in the case as to whether such banknotes with such serial numbers exist.
