In a position published by the formation's press centre, VMRO - Bulgarian National Movement said on Sunday that the decision whether Bulgaria should adopt the euro cannot be taken by compromised politicians, against the will of the people or under external pressure. "This is an issue of great importance for Bulgaria's economy, national identity and sovereignty. That is why we believe that the Bulgarian people have every right to decide this issue by direct vote," the position reads.

Friday's statement of President Rumen Radev that he will table a proposal to Parliament for a referendum on the euro's adoption, comes against the backdrop of a severe division in Bulgarian society on this issue, and whether his political or personal goals are behind this move is not particularly relevant, VMRO - Bulgarian National Movement said. "The arrogant attitude of the Government, which claims that the people should not and cannot be asked about this issue, is further fuel for the burning fire of Euroscepticism," the position reads.

"The Government's position that the people cannot be asked about this issue is arrogant in the extreme. We from VMRO once again state that the referendum is the highest form of democracy. The Government's fear of asking its people leads to the conclusion that they are aware of the people's opinion. And that this majority opinion is not in favour of their actions. That is to say, despite being aware of this fact, they continue to ignore the will of the people," the position reads further.

The introduction of the euro really needs to be done with a huge public consensus, VMRO argues, adding that Bulgaria's European orientation is alternative-free and in the spirit of European traditions.
