Kamen Iliev, head of the Center for National Security and Defense Research (CNSDR) with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), said that outer space should once again be a priority for Bulgaria. Iliev spoke at the international seminar Space for Defense and Security, which took place at the Central Military Club in Sofia on Friday.

Iliev referred to an EU survey on the public support for space activities in Europe, according to which Bulgarians rank third in support for conducting space research, as it is important for the country. Bulgaria ranks first in support of funding being allocated to space exploration, Iliev added.

Iliev questioned why the state does not allocate more funds for space exploration. He said: "People, who lived in modern-day Bulgaria some 2,000 years before us, would look at the sky and ponder - who are we, where do we come from, and where are we heading to?".

The forum was organized by CNSDR with BAS, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence and Eurisy. The main focus is promoting innovation in space activities and stimulating technological sovereignty in the security and defence sectors, with a view to ensuring better exchange between the civil and defence research and innovation communities. The event is under the auspices of the Ministry of Innovation and Growth.
