Bulgaria's production in construction declined by 0.8% in May compared with April, marking a third consecutive month of contraction, Eurostat reported on Monday. The monthly decrease followed declines of 0.1% in April and 0.2% in March. A steeper contraction of 1.7% was recorded in January.

In Bulgaria, construction of buildings fell by 0.8% in May from the previous month. Civil engineering decreased by 1.1%, and specialised construction activities were down by 0.3%.

Across the euro area, production in construction increased by 0.4% month on month in May, while the EU recorded a 0.3% rise. The increase was driven by specialized construction activities, which expanded by 1.4% in both the euro area and the EU.

By contrast, production decreased in the other two main construction sectors. In the euro area, construction of buildings fell by 0.7%, and civil engineering dropped 0.5%, while in the EU the declines were 0.4% and 1.3%, respectively.

The Bulgarian construction sector increased its output by 5.6% in May compared with the same month in 2025, even though it marked a slowdown for the third consecutive month, following growth of 6.8% in April and 6.4% in March 2026.

Among EU Member States, the largest monthly decreases in production in construction were registered in Hungary (-6.4%), Spain (-2.8%) and Slovenia (-1.9%). The highest increases were observed in Austria (+3.3%), the Netherlands (+2%) and France (+1.3%).
