Sunny Beach-South has retained its Blue Flag status for the 19th time after once again meeting the standards of the international environmental programme, the beach management told BTA on Tuesday.

The beach is monitored by health, environmental, and safety authorities, as well as environmental experts, the management noted, adding that the Blue Flag certification is awarded for one season and requires annual renewal, with inspections carried out throughout the summer by both Bulgarian and international programme representatives.

Accessibility remains a key priority. Free umbrellas and sunbeds are available for visitors with disabilities, and wooden pathways provide wheelchair access to both the beach and the sea. A floating beach wheelchair is offered free of charge, allowing people with limited mobility to enter the water with assistance from trained staff and lifeguards.

Additional amenities include waiter service, changing cabins, showers, waste bins, and sand-cleaning equipment. Premium beach cabanas and daybeds are available for visitors seeking higher-end services, while all restaurants and bars along the beach are open for the summer season.

Blue Flag is a voluntary certification programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), an international organization with members from over 80 countries. It has operated for nearly 40 years, annually evaluating and certifying beaches, marinas, and tourism vessels. Currently, around 5,200 sites worldwide participate in the programme, including Bulgarian beaches and marinas.

BTA will present all 32 Bulgarian beaches and ports awarded with the Blue Flag in 2026 by the international jury of the Copenhagen Programme. The first Blue Flag in Bulgaria was raised on Sunny Beach on July 4, 1995.
