A 31-year-old Austrian citizen was injured in an incident at the Veliki Preslav National Historical and Archaeological Reserve near the northeastern town of Shumen, said the Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry.

At around 3:40 a.m. on Sunday, the man fell about three metres from an old stone wall while walking in the reserve. He was taken to a hospital in Shumen, where a brain haemorrhage was diagnosed. He was admitted for treatment and remains in a life-threatening condition.

Pre-trial proceedings are under way, the police said.

On January 19, 2024, the Council of Ministers decided that the reserve would be managed and administered by Veliki Preslav Municipality for ten years.
