A request for the extradition of an individual with the initials S. M., who is being held in Serbia, was signed by acting Prosecutor General Vanya Stefanova, the prosecution service reported on Friday. Earlier Friday, Prosecutor Desislava Petrova, spokesperson for the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, told reporters that the former executive director of the Bulgarian Development Bank, Stoyan Mavrodiev, was detained in Serbia on June 3.
Petrova added that steps were taken to have Mavrodiev extradited to Bulgaria, and the decision rests with the Serbian authorities.
The request is expected to be sent to the Serbian authorities through the Ministry of Justice early next week. A potential extradition will be carried out with the assistance of Interpol. The request to the Serbian Minister of Justice seeks the extradition of S. M. to the Bulgarian authorities for the purpose of criminal prosecution.
S. M. has been placed on an international wanted list based on a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Sofia City Court at the request of the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office and confirmed by the Appellate Court in Sofia.
