Guillermo Tomas Silva, the overall leader of the Giro d'Italia after the opening three stages in Bulgaria, said he was very pleased with how the race unfolded in Bulgaria and hopes to keep the pink jersey for as long as possible once the Giro moves to Italy.
The 24-year-old rider of the XDS Astana Team said the Bulgarian stages had been exciting and highlighted both his stage victory and his success in retaining the race lead after the finish in Sofia.
Silva said maintaining the pink jersey remains a goal for both himself and his team, although they plan to approach the race day by day.
The Uruguayan rider also said he enjoyed riding in pink and thanked fans in Bulgaria and Uruguay for their support throughout the opening stages.
On Saturday, Silva became the first cyclist from Uruguay to win a stage in one of cycling’s three Grand Tours.
