A ceremony held at the yacht port in the Old Town of Nessebar marked the start of the 109th Giro d'Italia cycling race on Friday. Nessebar Mayor Nikolay Dimitrov waved the flag signalling the start of the first of three Bulgarian stages of the tournament.
A total of 184 cyclists from 23 teams will compete for the four jerseys: the pink jersey for the overall leader of Giro d’Italia, the purple/cyclamen jersey for the points classification leader, the blue jersey for the best climber (king of the mountains), and the white jersey for the best young rider.
Thousands of spectators from around the world, including Colombia, Uruguay, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Czechia, Slovakia, Romania, the Netherlands and Belgium, gathered to support the participants, who were introduced one by one on a specially built stage.
Greetings on behalf of Bulgaria were delivered by Nessebar Mayor Nikolay Dimitrov, who described the town as "the pearl in the crown of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast", and by MEP Andrey Kovachev.
"Traditionally, we open the tourist season in May, and what better beginning than the start of the 109th Giro d’Italia," Dimitrov said.
"I am excited and proud that Bulgaria is part of the beginning of this great event, Giro d’Italia, because sport unites people," Kovachev said.
The Giro cyclists completed a lap of honour around Old Nessebar before the official start of the race. They rode through the streets of the historical town, attracting the attention of residents, visitors and tourists.
