Caretaker Minister of Agriculture and Food Ivan Hristanov told reporters here on Saturday that 24 people are under constant medical supervision and are receiving preventive antibiotic treatment in connection with the anthrax case that was established in a buffalo farm in the Silistra village of Chernogor and publicized on April 20. The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency reported that nine animals died, and the rest will be vaccinated.
Hristanov reported: "There is one point where the problem originated. We are tracing the entire chain of transmission. [...] All vehicles, stores, and anything that came into contact with the virus have been decontaminated. The food has been confiscated. We aim to have this issue resolved by the beginning of next week."
The Minister was adamant that there is no danger to the public. He added: "The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, we serve as guarantors, and we can do our job when our advice is heeded, and citizens actively participate in combating diseases that can be transmitted through food."
Hristanov urged the public to purchase food only from regulated and inspected retail outlets to ensure food safety and prevent similar incidents.
