Work accidents in Bulgaria exceeded 2,800 last year, the National Social Security Institute (NSSI) said. The data were published in its first bulletin for 2026.
In 2025, a total of 3,117 work-related incidents were reported to the NSSI. Of these, 2,826 were recorded as work accidents, with 2,356 occurring at the workplace and 470 while commuting to or from work. Fatal accidents numbered 76, and the lost calendar days due to work accidents for the year totalled 144,008.
Nearly 39% of workplace accidents were recorded in Sofia, followed by Plovdiv with 10.39%, Varna 6.67%, Sofia Region 5.36% and Stara Zagora 3.79%. The sectors with the greatest number of accidents at the workplace or while performing official duties were manufacturing with 565 accidents, trade 383, transportation, storage and post 303, construction 208, public administration 125, education 101, human health and social work 93, water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation 85, mining 73, and administrative and support service activities 65, among others, the NSSI stated.
Of the 76 fatal workplace accidents, 64 occurred at the workplace or during official duties, while 12 occurred while commuting. The largest number of fatal incidents, 15, was reported in the transportation, storage and the postal sector, manufacturing 12, and construction and trade 9 each.
Compared with 2024, the number of reported work accidents increased, the NSSI said. Accidents occurring at the workplace decreased by 20, while those occurring during commuting increased by 23. Fatal workplace accidents rose by 12. The total lost calendar days due to workplace accidents in 2025 were 20,470 fewer than in 2024. The average duration of temporary incapacity due to a workplace accident in 2025 was almost 51 calendar days, seven days fewer than in 2024.
